For decades, the Outdoor Science School has reconnected students with the natural world while teaching solid science fundamentals. The program’s mission is to provide a loving environment where students can be themselves and grow in the areas of Stewardship, Character, Wonder of Nature, and Science Literacy while exploring its unique setting. The Outdoor Science program operates out of Mount Hermon’s Redwood Camp campus and is a relationship-based, Naturalist-centered program with curriculum designed to meet Next Generation Science Standards for 5th and 6th grades. Each participating student and teacher receives an outstanding field guide, and teachers and cabin leaders come free of charge up to a given ratio. Reported science test scores can improve up to 26% after an Outdoor Science Camp experience. The Outdoor Science School is led by OSS Director Gretchen Phillips.

Teacher feedback includes comments that the weeks’ activities and classes exceeded expectations and that the camp is really well run and well planned for kids. Teachers describe the learning and hands-on activities as important for all learners and say the experience inspires them to find better ways to present science in their classrooms. Other teachers note a combination of teambuilding and science content, students enjoying the freedom of outdoor learning, and students liking getting their hands dirty and eating plants. Additional comments highlight positive, approachable, and supportive staff who made learning exciting and fun, and teachers report watching their students bloom and transform over multiple years. One teacher shared that a special needs student “had the best week,” loved his Naturalist, went home happy, and was ready to come back every day.
