Oakstrong Martial Arts has been serving the community since 2015 with classes and workshops in the San Lorenzo Valley. Instructor Neville Loberg has been honing his craft in the martial arts since 1982 and leads the program. The program offers classes and workshops for teens and adults, with a curriculum that is described as comprehensive from beginner to black belt and beyond, and beginners can join at any time. Training weapons are provided for instruction, small classes allow for personal instruction, and private lessons are available to fine-tune skills or prepare for promotion testing. The studio uses a punch-card payment system with no contracts or auto-withdrawals, and there are no extra fees for association membership or promotion testing.
According to the mission statement, Oakstrong Martial Arts offers a mix of hard-style and soft-style Tang Soo Do karate, self-defense psychology and techniques, and weapons, and invites participants to experience positive reinforcement, a workout, enhanced ability to defend themselves, and a community of people. Community involvement includes classes, school classes, and private self-defense workshops available in the Santa Cruz region, with workshops that can be customized to the specific needs of a team and the situations they face, including options for women, teens, community workers, or any small group. Equipment guidelines state that beginners need no special uniform or equipment at first, a traditional karate uniform is required to promote for the first rank, and common-sense safety equipment is required for sparring and partner drills.
Parent and student testimonials describe gains in self-respect, confidence, strength, and feeling centered and connected after training, and they describe the instructor as a strong teacher and mentor who balances the formality of the art with accessible teaching and personal patience.
