Odyssey Preschool & Montessori is a child-centered learning community that states a commitment to respecting the unique personality, gifts, and development of each student, and to promoting a culture of kindness, curiosity, and cooperation. The program’s stated goal is to cultivate both independence and an awareness of global interdependence, and to create an inclusive, respectful, and empowering educational environment that celebrates diversity and encourages lifelong learning.
The program follows a Montessori approach with mixed-age classrooms and materials that are systematically arranged from left to right, progressing from introductory to advanced levels. Classroom activities focus on social and emotional regulation, language development, gross and fine motor skills, pre-reading and writing, mathematics, cultural diversity, sensorial experiences, and practical life skills. Daily life in the classroom includes practical tasks such as dressing, cleaning, and food preparation, alongside stories, songs, and conversations.
Odyssey Preschool & Montessori collaborates closely with a Montessori teacher training center to provide guidance and training to interns, and many classrooms are supervised by one or two Master Teachers. Odyssey is among the Montessori schools recognized as training centers and is fully equipped with an extensive range of materials. The school originated as a family day care center in founder Prabha Sanjay’s home in 2009, transitioned to a full-fledged preschool in 2010, and expanded from one classroom to five at its current Foster City site in 2012. By 2018, the program had launched Odyssey Toddlers and Odyssey Montessori in Palo Alto, where Mandy is the director and teachers such as Miss Marthe and Miss Nuo are mentioned by name in parent feedback. One of the founder’s first hires was Anne Diamond, described as an experienced Montessori educator and director.
Reflecting the diversity of the Bay Area, the curriculum incorporates global perspectives and multiple languages, and parent testimonials specifically mention children learning Mandarin and having bilingual support. The program was created to celebrate cultural diversity, especially for the local Indian community. Parents describe teachers as nurturing and caring, mention strong bonds with specific teachers such as Ms. Jing, and note experiences with potty training support, organized and clean classrooms, and school events and parties. Multiple testimonials state that children sing new songs at home, bring back creative crafts and artwork, and talk about their friends and teachers.
