From its beginning in 1999 in a garage with a handful of students, Aerodance grew as an academy serving more than 1000 students in the Bay Area. It is described as a premier creative learning school of dance specializing in various Indian dance forms and is based on a strong classical foundation. Aerodance became a forerunner in winning Bay Area dance competitions and launched the annual recital event AEROVAGANZA to showcase student levels and talent. The academy states that it diligently works towards its mission by paying personal attention to students within the curriculum and in personal life.
The director, Ms. Ranjani Avijit, has a double master’s in Child Psychology and is a Kuchipudi exponent. Aerodance designed a graduation program to get students more passionate about learning dance as an art form and defined a Semi Classical Program with a syllabus that touches the roots of classical dance styles, simplified for the younger generation and described as trendy yet conservative in approach. Aerodance is a pioneer in issuing certificates for a Semi-Classical dance course, and Aerograduates receive an international certificate issued by UNESCO in the field of Semi Classical dance. The academy notes that its choreography is marked by culturally appropriate dance steps rendered in a zestful manner, and it takes extreme care to keep costumes dignified, tasteful, and culturally appropriate.
