About

Summer Day Camp includes Bible stories, singing songs, playing games, learning prayers with sign language, enjoying snacks, and making colorful crafts. Campers take part in activities such as dancing, relay-racing, crafting, a music program, and sign language. They also do active challenges with cardboard boxes by collecting boxes and building towers, tunnels, sculptures, and box forts, along with projects like tie-dye, paint pouring, sand art, pom-pom making, collage, making a labyrinth out of clay, making a protein bar, building with clay, and painting rocks.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Summer day camp held the last week of July.

Summer Day Camp is led by a team that includes Rev Lori Walton, Rev Ingrid Jacobson, Jan Scrutton, Jennifer who leads the music program, Bev who teaches sign language, Tom and Jill who lead games, and Lauren and Bob who provide snacks. The camp uses youth volunteers, including some who were former campers, and involves people from toddlers to seniors. One volunteer reports participating for 11 years and describes many memories and fun times, and another notes volunteering for all 9 years of Summer Camp and observing the growth of the children and the planning that goes into the week. Parents and campers describe enjoying the projects and games, including the box games, decorating pillowcases, making a labyrinth out of clay, building a box fort, making a protein bar to take home, building with clay, and painting rocks. Comments from volunteers and parents mention that campers spend each half day singing, dancing, listening to stories, relay-racing, having snacks, crafting, and learning sign language, and that children have continued singing at home after camp. St. James’ has celebrated 10 and 11 years of day camp, and has been part of the Fremont community since 1867. The mission statement for the program’s church home says that its present and future is based on efforts to work together for neighbors, welcoming and accepting all people.
