Music For Minors II is a nonprofit volunteer organization that has been providing music enrichment programs since 1988. Its mission is to nurture the love and literacy of music in children’s classrooms and lives through instruction, participation, and performances, enhancing academic education with musical arts. The organization recruits and trains community volunteers as music docents through a free in-person annual fall training class taught in Fremont. Music For Minors II was founded in 1988 by Carol Zilli as a nonprofit organization and is a 501(c)(3) organization.
Music For Minors II serves almost 5000 children in Fremont, Newark, and Castro Valley schools, with expansion underway in Pleasanton and Dublin, and has served more than 120,000 children in 5120 classrooms across 30 schools in 6 districts. The program began as a pilot at Niles Elementary School with seed money from Fremont Unified School District and the Candle Lighters, a local philanthropic women’s organization. MFMII docents work in partnership with classroom teachers, and many classroom teachers have been trained to become music docents in their own classrooms. The program includes performance opportunities for children at school sites, on professional stages in the community, and at family music events at local schools and community events, and resource centers were established to support the program.
