About
Hollister Ranch Conservancy Tide Pool School offers biologist-led explorations of tide pools that focus on the study and observation of a largely undisturbed coastal environment. Participants conduct marine, botanic, and geological studies, including intertidal studies of seaweed, limpets, and water temperature, and observe a wide variety of marine life such as mussels, sea hares, octopi, crabs, and occasionally lobster or shark.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
The program’s stated idea is to show kids the abundant sea life in the tide pools and to provide an educational experience for kids, many of whom have never been to a beach before. Tide Pool School serves awe-struck children ages 5 to 12 and takes place at Hollister Ranch’s tide pools, which are described as one of Hollister Ranch’s most cherished resources. Tide Pool School features biologist-led explorations, and public access is carefully managed, with professional naturalists supervising group visits and limits on group size, foot traffic in research areas, and the collection of samples.
Hollister Ranch is described as part of Southern California’s last wild coastline, and its Shoreline Preserve includes a two-plus mile protected zone teeming with sea life where the Hollister Ranch Conservancy operates a monitoring post. Hundreds of grade school students, many from underserved communities in neighboring areas, participate in tide pool explorations through this program. Hollister Ranch cooperates extensively with research teams from University of California campuses at Santa Barbara, Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Riverside, from the University of Florida and Occidental College, and from other academic institutions, and it partners with UCSB, UCLA, and UC Santa Cruz on intertidal studies of seaweed, limpets, and water temperature. It also partners with Channel Islands Restoration to enhance the snowy plover population through future mitigation programs. Jeff Kruthers is quoted regarding Tide Pool School, stating that kids always leave so enthusiastic and inspired.
