Gracie Barra Glendale was opened in 2010 by Robert Hill to expand Jiu Jitsu in Los Angeles. The academy follows the mission from Master Carlos Gracie Jr.: “We seek to train body, mind and spirit through the highest level of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction. We envision the art as a vehicle for individual development and the strengthening of the family spirit, going beyond the winning-losing or contest philosophy.” The program follows the motto “Jiu Jitsu for everyone.”
All instructors at Gracie Barra Glendale are ICP certified through Gracie Barra. The leadership team includes Professor Robert, lead instructor and academy owner, who is a 3rd degree black belt; Professor Marvin, adults instructor and 2nd degree black belt; Professor Nick, adults instructor and 1st degree black belt; Professor Devon, adults instructor; Professor Fausto, part-time adults and GBK instructor; and Professor Josh, adults instructor. Gracie Barra Glendale offers a free trial class and an option to try the first week free. The academy reports having over 1,000 students in the community and is active on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Gracie Barra Glendale welcomes students from Glendale and neighboring communities such as Burbank, Pasadena, Eagle Rock, Montrose, La Cañada Flintridge, Silverlake, and Hollywood.
Parent and student reviews describe the program as “Best Gracie Barra in LA. Professor Rob and his team are real, dedicated and encouraging of all skill levels” (Val D., Google) and “Great place to learn BJJ. All teachers are extremely knowledgeable. Tones of experience in this place. After each class, I feel like I’m alive again” (Alen A., Google). Other reviewers say it is a “Wonderful facility with amazing instructors” (Brad K., Google) and “a wonderful Jiu Jitsu school for virtually everyone” (Zareh A., Google). One parent notes, “The people are really kind, the gym is always clean, and they do a great job of teaching the art as a self defense and a sport” (John S., Google), and another calls it “Welcoming, no egos, safety conscious…a great place to learn BJJ” (Michael J., Google). A family review states, “My son goes. My husband goes. I go. It’s the best thing for a family to improve self-defense, discipline and self respect” (Val D.), and another parent shares, “Whether it is self-defense, sport, competition, or just a challenging way to stay physically fit, Gracie Barra Glendale exceeds all of my expectations…My 6 year old son also loves attending his classes and learning in a supportive, yet disciplined environment” (Zareh A.).
