About
Sacramento Traditional Shotokan Karate offers training in traditional Shotokan karate, with classes that focus on Kihon, Kata, and Kumite. The program includes rigorous karate classes with an emphasis on understanding the principles of JKA Traditional Shotokan Karate and is not geared toward “sport” karate. Beginners are incorporated into the regular class and are separated out for specialized instruction, and anyone who wants to try a single class or drop in, including students from other styles, is welcome to attend.
• Ages: 12–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings
• Price: Club membership + $20 per month; Single Class Training Fee: $20 for Tuesday or Thursday class, paid at the front desk
The program states that any race, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation persons are welcome to train, and that courtesy, discipline, and hard work will be expected. The stated mission is that the ultimate goal of the training is to improve the character of the individual, both physically and mentally. Sacramento Traditional Shotokan Karate serves families in Gold River, Rancho Cordova, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Orangevale, and Sacramento, California, and is associated with the Kids Karate program at Broadstone Sports Club in Folsom, California.
Classes are led by Sensei John Leggett, 7th Dan, who has been training in traditional Shotokan karate for well over 30 years with some of the top Shotokan instructors in the world, especially Sensei Nishiyama, 10th Dan and head of ITKF, AAKF, JKA International-USA and co-founder of the JKA. Sensei Leggett has also studied Budo Taijutsu for over 10 years and holds a black belt in that style. He is an accomplished professional trumpet player with a Master’s Degree in Music and performs regularly in the Sacramento area with local orchestras and arts organizations such as the Sacramento Symphony, Opera, Sacramento Ballet, and Sacramento Choral Society. He also works full time for Williams Sonoma as a Senior Security Compliance and Disaster Recovery Analyst. The broader leadership connection includes Sensei Al Trimarchi, who is the instructor for the Kids Karate program at Broadstone Sports Club in Folsom, California.
