About
Lobster Jo's offers a mix of activities that include skating at the waterfront, art in the FunkZone, beach play at Stern's Wharf, adventures in Goleta's newest parks, and ocean activities. At Lobster Jo's Art Camp, mornings are dedicated to daily art lessons and afternoons are spent at Lobster Jo's Beach Camp, and at Skate Camp children learn proper skateboarding technique, practice new skills, and explore the challenges of Skater's Point, with a chance to show off their skills to family and friends at the end of each day.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: Lobster Jo's Half-Day runs for three hours from 12 P.M. to 3 P.M.
Lobster Jo's was created by Joseph Evers. Lobster Jo's offers numerous programs around Santa Barbara County, focusing on summer camps that are tailored to activities around town, and aims for kids to know the town like the back of their hand. At Lobster Jo's Beach Camp, children have ocean activities, beach-themed arts and crafts, group games, friendly sandcastle contests, surfing, and beach party karaoke. At Lobster Jo's Half-Day, campers are escorted from Ceramics, Skate, or Beach Volleyball Camp to Lobster Jo's Beach Camp. All skill levels are welcome at Skate Camp. Junior Counselors experience the life of a camp counselor while earning Community Service Hours for their high school graduation requirements.
The program’s stated mission is “Curiosity, Stewardship, Community,” and it focuses on exploration, play, and expression through activities such as surfing, crafting, and skating. The organization states that it fosters a sense of community among youth and describes itself with phrases such as “ADVENTURE & CURIOSITY INSPIRE TOMORROW'S LEADERS,” “We Are FUN. We Are STEWARDS,” and “The power of EXPRESSION cultivates a vibrant community.”
Parent feedback includes comments that an 11-year-old “learned new skills, made friends and was never bored” and “loved it.” Another parent described the camp as “incredibly well run,” with “excellent” counselors, and asked that the program continue through the rest of the summer and return the following year. One parent shared that their child, who had not previously been “a beach guy,” learned “how to have fun in the water and on the beach,” and described the counselors as “great and attentive” and “positive and upbeat,” with “a ton of fun things to do.” Another parent, who tried about a dozen summer camps, said Lobster Jo’s was “the clear winner,” noted that their 7-year-old was excited to go and tired at pickup, and mentioned that the counselors are “cool,” that the camp has a section of the beach clearly marked with giant lobster flags, that dropoff and pickup are easy from the Garden St. lot, that the kids are in and out of the water constantly, and that counselors were good about sunscreen re-application.
