About
ThruGUIDANCE 24° of Color Diversity Ice Skating Program includes ice skating, Learn to Skate (LTS), ice hockey, and introductory hockey skills. 24 Degrees of Color skaters can learn to skate while pursuing introductory hockey skills and a pathway to play through the L.A. Kings “We Are All Kings” Learn to Skate program. LA Kings partnered with Kendal R. Troutman and the 24° of Color Diversity Ice Skating Program to introduce kids to hockey by way of equipment and lessons.
• Ages: 4–14 years old
• Schedule: Program sessions are held on Thursdays from 4–5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m. The hockey program has a commitment of 2 or more years.
Since 2021, ThruGUIDANCE has operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. ThruGUIDANCE provides young people in underserved communities access to ice sports and academic support while cultivating community pride. ThruGUIDANCE Missions has provided free visual and performing art programs, wellness camps, and academic scholarships in Rwanda to young people living in various communities. The Diversity Ice Skating program of ThruGUIDANCE has a goal to diversify ice skating and ice hockey in LA County by making these sports more accessible financially, ensuring diverse representation at the rink, introducing young people to recreational ice sports, and providing resources for them to compete competitively, if interested. The program only enrolls 20 new skaters at each location in March and September, and it is no longer enrolling additional figure skaters.
ThruGUIDANCE lists its Founder and Executive Director as Kendal Troutman and one of its cofounders as Imani Rickerby. ThruGUIDANCE has received the Guidestar 2020 Platinum Seal, and LA Kings Black History Month Community MVP is Kendal Troutman. The program is in partnership with the Toyota Sports Performance Center, Los Angeles Kings, and LA Kings Iceland in Paramount. Thanks to support from the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition and Blake Bolden, 24° of Color took 18 elite hockey players to Detroit in May 2024 for a “Community, Culture, and Hockey” weekend through a partnership with NHL Unites. One testimonial from Kendal R. Troutman describes a large check as “a prayer come true” and “a dream come true,” and another ThruGUIDANCE quote states that breaking generational cycles and destroying barriers of poverty has always been their “love language.”
