About
PS Science STEM & Code Clubs and Community STEM Programs offers STEM learning experiences through Code Club, STEM Clubs, after school clubs, and camps. The program includes hands-on STEM learning and hands-on, inquiry-based, weekly science in classrooms and at community-based organizations, delivered virtually or in person.
• Ages: 5–11 years old
PS Science brings hands-on STEM learning to elementary school children and supports classroom teachers and community educators with lessons, materials, and training so they can provide students with regular and ongoing science. The program provides elementary school teachers with a sustainable classroom model for weekly science that includes materials, curriculum, and training, and instructors provide coaching support for teachers as they implement a new NGSS aligned science curriculum. Science-loving students can join a STEM or Code Club at their school to stay engaged and challenged in STEM learning beyond the classroom, and the program also brings STEM learning experiences or classes to kids at community-based organizations, virtually or in person.
PS Science was launched in 2006 as a project of the Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation, an initiative of Crossroads School in Santa Monica, and became its own separate nonprofit organization in 2018. It was created to bring science education to children in underserved communities across Los Angeles and is currently in partnership with 18 schools for the 2024–2025 school year, bringing year-round STEM programming to over 11,000 students in classrooms and out-of-school programming locations. Through after school clubs, camps, and partnerships with community-based organizations, PS Science includes science experiences for kids outside of school.
Students who participated in the PS Science classroom program scored 75% higher than the national average on a recent assessment, and in June 2019, PS Science 4th grade students performed 99% better than the national average in a standardized science assessment. The program’s goal is to ensure that all kids have an equal chance at the STEM careers of the future.
Parent feedback about PS Science includes comments such as, “I love this program. It has changed my child's life,” and “He has learned how to think like a scientist. He also has developed critical thinking skills that he applies to other subjects.” Another parent shared, “She is always telling us about lessons and how she can't miss Tuesdays because of PS Science.”
