About

Nike Beach Volleyball Camp at College of Marin with Bodhi Beach Volleyball Club focuses on beach volleyball fundamental skills, game strategy, and gameplay. Campers take part in demos, drills, and a tournament at the end of the session, and some campers have reported learning a jump serve with top spin.

The camp is led by Nike Camp Director Heidi Ilustre-Boatright, who began her beach volleyball career in 2000 playing local tournaments around Oahu and later qualified for the AVP tour with partner Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson, earning numerous top ten finishes. In 2005, the Philippines Olympic Committee recruited Heidi and Diane Nelson to represent the Philippines internationally at the Asia Games, Southeast Asia Games, and FIVB World Tour with the goal of qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In 2010, she assisted Daryl Kapis in launching the Hawaii Pacific University beach program, and she has coached at UCLA Bruin Beach, Golden Gate Volleyball in Marin, The Lab in Colorado with Mike Patton, and SynergyBeach in Sacramento, working with athletes who went on to play collegiate beach volleyball. The leadership team also includes Assistant Coach Lily (Lilly) Peterson, a volleyball player at Arizona Christian University whose team reached the GSAC conference finals and qualified for Nationals as one of the top 8 schools in the GSAC, and Camp Coach Jon Bergland, who played indoors at Sonoma State for five years, earning NCCVL all-league honors and coaching with Marin Juniors, Empire, and Absolute indoor clubs.

Camp information notes that training is provided by an elite coaching staff with a low staff-to-camper ratio, and that the camp is open to players of all skill levels. Girls and boys receive instruction through demos, drills, and gameplay, with only two players on each side of the court to increase repetitions of all skills. Volleyballs are provided for instruction, and campers at this multi-day camp receive a Nike Volleyball Camps T-shirt and prizes, with the option to purchase a camp volleyball at registration to be given out on the last day. Lunch is not provided, and campers are asked to bring their own lunch, along with suggested items such as athletic clothing, sandals and sand socks, a hat, beach towel, water bottle, sunscreen, personal hygiene products, and a small gym bag or backpack. Transportation is not provided, and there is no supervision before or after camp hours, so campers are responsible for their own transportation and timely pick-up.

Parent and camper reviews from recent seasons mention co-ed teams and learning to work together as a team, a tournament at the end that simulated a real tournament, and a camper learning to do a jump serve with top spin. Reviews also describe Heidi as “amazing as always,” note that one camper was able to switch from indoor to beach volleyball, and describe the camp as an “opportunity to grow and learn based on approach and effort of the staff” and “the most fun camp environment” they had been part of.
