Crescenta-Cañada Cooperative Nursery School is a cooperative preschool nurtured and operated by the families whose children attend the school, and parents are members of a cooperative community involved in their child’s play and educational experiences. The philosophy emphasizes the importance of self-esteem and a child’s healthy development that recognizes the value of learning through play, and the mission states that the school offers an exceptional early childhood experience for the entire family in a play-based atmosphere where children learn best through actively participating in their surroundings. Parent participation includes working in the classroom approximately twice a month as classroom aides, every family taking on a committee job that contributes to the school's operation, and mandatory monthly parent education meetings. CCNS is licensed by the State of California as a non-profit cooperative nursery school (License #: 191223494) and admits students of any race, denomination, color and national or ethnic origin.

The preschool serves families from La Cañada, La Crescenta, Glendale, Eagle Rock, Los Feliz, Sunland-Tujunga and Pasadena, and families stay connected through a school-wide WhatsApp group for updates, playdates, support, volunteer collaboration, school events, sharing local resources and recommendations, and an alumni parent group that keeps friendships alive long after graduation. One parent, Elizabeth D., shares that CCNS shaped who she is as a parent and describes the teachers as warm and deeply attuned to the kids, the community as real and lasting, and says her children were genuinely loved there. Another parent, Courtney L., notes that their family first looked for a place for their daughter to make friends and found a community for the whole family, and says their children enjoy the variety of activities from play-based learning to arts and crafts and are met with genuine warmth and care each day. A third parent, Patrick M., says his daughter still talks about her time at CCNS, calls it a core memory, and describes teachers who treat every child as an individual and a community that felt genuinely supportive before her transition to kindergarten.
