• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: 16-week summer and winter seasons, plus playoffs; office hours Tuesday–Friday, 11 am–6 pm
California Soccer League originated in 1988 in the inner city of San Diego. The program’s job assignment was to keep kids active and out of trouble. It began as a free youth soccer program in a low income area, with volunteer parents and older siblings serving as referees. With support from community residents, the program became a regular Saturday event and a step into job opportunities, and three teenagers who helped with the program later became City employees working with the Recreation Department. One staff member previously worked as a San Diego City employee with the Parks and Recreation Department as a Recreation Leader.
The league offers advanced to beginner adult and youth divisions in San Diego, with Open, First, and Second Divisions for different levels of play. Divisions for men and women are available in 6v6 or 11v11 formats, and youth divisions are offered in 8v8 or 11v11 formats. The summer season runs from January to June and the winter season runs from July to December, each lasting 16 weeks plus playoffs. The top 8 teams qualify for playoffs in a 16-team bracket, and there are individual awards for 1st and 2nd place, as well as team trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There is an additional referees fee during playoffs.
