Laguna Canyon Foundation is dedicated to the conservation and ongoing protection of the South Coast Wilderness and focuses on the 22,000-acre South Coast Wilderness system of parks and preserves. Its trail program maintains and improves 26 miles of singletrack trail in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, and its mission for the trail program is to bring all South Coast Wilderness trail users together to find common ground, learn about what it takes to build and maintain trails, develop a sense of stewardship, and improve the trails. Each school year, the education program brings second through fifth grade students from Title 1 partner schools for a day on the trails, and the program follows Next Generation Science Standards.

Laguna Canyon Foundation was formed following the passage of a twenty-million-dollar bond measure by Laguna Beach voters in November 1990. In 2007, the organization began transitioning its mission from land acquisition to conservation and education, and the trail program launched in 2014. In 2015, the organization began partnering with the City of Laguna Beach on fuel modification work, and in 2024 it celebrated 10 years of maintaining and improving the 26 miles of singletrack trail in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park.

Field educator Chrisha Favors has a Bachelor’s in Education and taught music lessons for ten years prior to teaching environmental science. Laguna Canyon Foundation’s education program reaches out to Title 1 schools where a high percentage of the students are from low-income families, and most of the kids on its field trips are experiencing their first time in the wilderness. The organization partners with like-minded organizations and over 130 dedicated volunteers to conserve and preserve the land, and its volunteer program connects these volunteers with OC Parks.

Testimonials describe that the education programs support biodiversity in nature and promote diversity in nature, and that Laguna Canyon Foundation fosters diversity, inclusion, and representation in the outdoors. Testimonials also state that the program teaches students the NGSS standards and teaches them to be future stewards of the planet, and that the educator is passionate about the outdoors and environmental science.
