STEM Day for 4th & 5th Grade Kids is a 1-day Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics workshop where students rotate through hands-on sessions such as Engineering Structures, Magnetism, Cryptography, mineral identification, foundational coding concepts using Ozobots, proteins and denaturing egg albumin proteins, Cyber CSI, Aerodynamic Forces, and DNA of Living Things. In Engineering Structures, students learned about sturdiness, leverage, and balance while building a test structure using a cantilever. In other sessions, students learned about making not normally magnetic things magnetic, investigated a playful crime scene where precious jewels had gone missing, and identified minerals based on physical characteristics like hardness, color, crystal structure, luster, and cleavage.

Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin AAUW (American Association of University Women) has been a presence in the Tri-Valley for over 70 years. Naomi Siu and Pam Leong have led this event for the last three years. AAUW’s mission is that at all levels, AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.
The branch partnered with Sandia National Laboratory for STEM Day, and AAUW’s 2nd annual STEM Day for Girls was held in partnership with Sandia National Laboratory and Las Positas College and was sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories, with three different STEM workshops jointly developed. Fourth and 5th grade girls from Tri-Valley schools learned real-world concepts taught by Sandia scientists and engineers. For the first STEM Day in 2024, 100% of the girls wanted to come back next year, 48% of the girls could not choose which workshop was their favorite, and for 95% of the girls it was their first STEM event. Fifty-six fourth- and fifth-grade children participated in three workshops in 2026, and AAUW’s 2nd annual STEM Day for Girls had 55 girls attend, up from 41 girls in 2024.
