About

STEM Day for 4th & 5th Grade Kids is a 1-day Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics workshop where students rotate through hands-on activities. Participants work on engineering structures using a cantilever to explore sturdiness, leverage, and balance; experiment with magnetism by making items like slime or nails magnetic; and investigate a playful crime scene in a cryptography activity about missing jewels. Students also identify minerals by hardness, color, crystal structure, luster, and cleavage; learn foundational coding concepts using Ozobots; study proteins and protein structure by denaturing egg albumin proteins; and take part in sessions on Cyber CSI, aerodynamic forces, and the DNA of living things.

Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin AAUW (American Association of University Women) has been a presence in the Tri-Valley for over 70 years. Naomi Siu and Pam Leong have led this event for the last three years. AAUW’s 2nd annual STEM Day for Girls was held March 8, 2025, with 55 girls attending, up from 41 girls in 2024, and the first STEM Day for 4th and 5th grade girls was held on Saturday, March 9, 2024. For the 2024 event, 41 girls attended, 100% reported wanting to come back the next year, 48% could not choose a single favorite workshop, and for 95% it was their first STEM event. In 2026, fifty-six fourth- and fifth-grade children participated in three workshops. The Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin AAUW branch partnered with Sandia National Laboratory for STEM Day, and AAUW’s 2nd annual STEM Day for Girls in 2025 was held in partnership with Sandia National Laboratory and Las Positas College and was sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories, with three different STEM workshops jointly developed. At all levels, AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.
