The program is led by Director Nari (Naotaro) Kato. Nari completed a Bachelor of Arts in Education Studies with an emphasis in human development, and from 2021–2022 studied at Brown University's Department of Education to obtain a Master of Arts in Teaching for Secondary Mathematics Education. After a one-year residency at Hope High School in Providence Public Schools, Nari received a teaching certification in Rhode Island. The mission of Hope Learning Center is to support the academic needs of K–12 youth and their families in the South Bay Area, with a focus on students from immigrant backgrounds and support in navigating the US school system. The program works with students in small-group settings, prepares fun activities and high-quality play that also push students academically, celebrates students’ home languages and heritage, offers homework support for local Saturday Japanese Schools, and gives English Language Development instruction for newcomer and ELL-labeled students.

Nari has taught as an Adult English Instructor for the non-profit organization English for Action (Inglés en Acción) and for Providence Public Library's Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI). Nari advocates for the Japanese community in the LA South Bay and founded TASKI (たすき), an education support group for Japanese parents and youth. He received the 2021 Abelardo Hernández Community Engagement Award for his work. The program materials note © 2022 by Nari Kato.
