About

Velvet Movement Dance & Cheer Academy offers classes in dance, cheer, and performing arts, including ballet, contemporary, modern, classical jazz, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, competitive cheer, pom, hula, Tahitian dance, youth gymnastics, and musical theatre. The program takes place at the Velvet Movement Dance & Cheer Academy studio. Families are invited to register for fall, with details available in the fall schedule.

Velvet Movement Dance & Cheer Academy is locally owned and has a stated mission to empower dancers of all ages to unlock their full potential, both on and off the stage. The studio describes its environment as focused on encouragement, support, and belief in every individual, with an emphasis on cultivating confidence, resilience, and artistry, and as a place where passion, hard work, and personal growth intersect. Classes place emphasis on musicality, technique, storytelling in dance, and building foundational skills that transfer to art, cheer, and dance.

The leadership team includes Studio Owners Kira Gonzalez and Kendall Lopez, and Senior Instructors Brooklynn McGinnis, Alexandria Corn, and Delanie Valencia. Kira has over two decades of dance experience, was a member and later Captain of the Competitive Dance Team at California Lutheran University, participated in the university’s cheerleading team, served as Head Coach of Lompoc High School Cheer from 2014 to 2023, founded the Lompoc High School Pom team, founded and was Head Coach of the Lompoc Valley Middle School Cheer team from 2016 to 2019, earned a Master’s Degree in educational counseling, and has been a school counselor in the Lompoc Valley for eight years. Kendall has been dancing since age four with a classical ballet and tap background, later trained in jazz, lyrical, hip hop, and contemporary, coached cheer and pom for eleven years at Lompoc High School, coached and choreographed winning routines for three years of Lompoc Youth Allstars and Sideline Cheer, works at CHS and is Head Coach with CHS cheer, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Child Development and Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Teaching.

Senior Instructor Brooklynn started dance at age six in classical ballet, tap, and jazz, captained the varsity cheer and pom team at Lompoc High School, worked coaching the Lompoc YFL All Stars cheer program, has coached children ages 5–18, earned several first place awards and two grand champion wins during three years in Lompoc High Cheer, is currently working to get her bachelor’s in Psychology and child development from either UCSB or Cal Poly, and is currently coaching LVMS cheer. Senior Instructor Alexandria began dance training at age three at the Lompoc School of Dance, studied tap and jazz, trained in hula and Tahitian dance, was captain of her high school dance team for two years, minored in dance at Agnes Scott College, was a choreographer and performer for the college’s dance company, had work featured in multiple campus productions and selected for presentation at the American College Dance Association Conference, helped organize and run the annual fall showcase, now works as a freelance guest choreographer for high school dance and cheer programs, and is director of the revived Pacific Legends hula and Tahitian group. Senior Instructor Delanie has experience in ballet, tap, flamenco, salsa, merengue, bachata, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz, has choreographed routines for Lompoc High School Cheer and Pom and the Santa Barbara High School Dance Team, has been both a student and teacher at various studios, coached Lompoc YFL Cheer during competitive seasons, coached youth gymnastics at Santa Barbara My Gym, and has an extensive performance background in theatre arts.

Kendall and Kira have multiple Grand Champion and first-place accolades from competitive arenas in both cheer and dance. Brooklynn earned several first place awards and two grand champion wins during her three years in Lompoc High Cheer, and Alexandria’s choreography was selected for presentation at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) Conference. The studio is locally owned with a stated deep passion for the vibrant community of Lompoc, is committed to honoring Lompoc’s rich culture and contributing positively to the community, and includes Alexandria’s leadership of Pacific Legends in preserving and celebrating the cultural traditions of hula and Tahitian dance.
