Camp Fire Long Beach

Camp Fire Long Beach offers Starflight, Adventure, Discovery, Horizon, WRAP, Horizon Club Teens in Action, Work Health Love Award, Day Camp Aides, Counselor-in-Training (CIT), and Youth Leadership Team (YLT). Starflight is for K-2, Adventure is for ages 3-5, Discovery is for ages 6-8, and Horizon is for ages 9-12. WRAP is a free after school program offered at six Long Beach Unified School District schools.

Programs

• Starflight — K-2 · 45 min-1 hour, including a 10-15 minute snack
• Adventure — 3-5 · 1 hour-1 1/2 hours, including a 10-15 minute snack
• Discovery — 6-8 · 1 1/2 hours-2 hours, including a 10-15 minute snack
• Horizon — 9-12 · 1 1/2-2 hour meetings, including a 10-15 minute snack
• WRAP — Students enrolled at the school where it is offered
• Horizon Club Teens in Action — 9th-12th grades · Evening meetings on the first Monday of the month; other committee meetings as needed; monthly cabinet meetings
• Work Health Love Award — Begins after enrollment as a 9th grader
• Day Camp Aides — 9th-12th grades · Day camp sessions in June and August each summer
• Counselor-in-Training (CIT) — Sophomore and junior years of high school · Monthly training meetings for 1 1/2 hours prior to the regularly scheduled Horizon Club meeting
• Youth Leadership Team (YLT) — High school juniors and seniors · Training on weekday afternoons and evenings, and some Saturdays throughout the year

About the provider

Long Beach started its first Camp Fire club in 1923. Programs are coordinated and led by adult volunteer teams, with two volunteer adult coordinators required when a group is formed and present at every meeting. Camp Fire Long Beach says its program is designed to reduce sexual, racial, religious, and cultural stereotypes by fostering positive intercultural relationships.

Everyone is welcome in Camp Fire. A group can be structured to be single-sex or to include all youth. Uniforms are approved for wearing at school in the Long Beach Unified School District. New groups may register with six completed registration forms and are expected to grow to eight or more within 2 months. Two adult volunteer coordinators must be present at every meeting. Coordinators must attend New Coordinator Orientation prior to registering a new group and at least one member of each coordinator team must attend a monthly Coordinator Association meeting September-May.
