Emerging Artists Musical Theatre Academy Camps
Kick It Up, 8125 E. Wardlow Rd., Long Beach, CA 90808
About
Emerging Artists Musical Theatre Academy offers seasonal theatre camps, after school enrichment classes, musical theatre pop-up/intensives, and training/coaching in musical theatre. Programs serve as training/coaching, a creative outlet, a community, and a stepping stone in a life of inspired personal expression, and they respect and honor all levels of interest in musical theatre. The philosophy of the program is rooted in the age-old art of storytelling and how it connects people, with a belief that the study of this art form in its performance construct builds empathy and a stronger sense of self.
• Schedule: Year-round programs including seasonal theatre camps, after school enrichment classes, and musical theatre pop-up/intensives
Emerging Artists Musical Theatre Academy has proudly supported performance education for Southern California families for over twelve years, since its inception in 2013 by Director and Founder Sonya Henning. The mission of the program is to provide students of all ages with a knowledge of theatre, movement, and musicality, as well as production and performance technique in an established environment that cultivates self-expression and self-discovery. The program states a belief that theatre experience teaches tools for a lifetime, whether used in a board room or on Broadway, and that musical theatre should be accessible to everyone. Instructors and programs honor children of all genders and backgrounds, and many students return season after season, with some returning as assistants into their early adulthood. One testimonial from Sonya Henning describes creative education as “a living breathing entity that changes depending on who its students are, it’s a safe place to practice and explore the human condition.” Another quoted statement from Zelda Fichandler of Tisch School of the Arts emphasizes that audiences need the living experience of theatre “to see what can happen to a human in this time between two darknesses—and imaginatively what, then, could happen to one’s own self.”
