About
The Summer Youth Conservatory offers training in acting, singing, dancing, and playwriting. The program runs as a 4-week session and ends with a performance in the theatre that features the students’ work.

International City Theatre founded the program in 1985 at Long Beach City College and moved it downtown to the Beverly O’Neill Theatre in 1996. International City Theatre’s mission is to entertain, educate, inspire and provoke thoughtful dialogue through live theatre by offering five professional, high quality mainstage productions and six education programs each year. Its education programs include the Performing Arts Classroom Teaching (PACT) Program, Senior Outreach Program, Students to Stage, Free Saturday Family Theatre Series, and an Internship Program. The theatre has been recognized as The Official Resident Professional Theatre Company of Long Beach by unanimous City Council vote in 1999 and has received more than 500 professional awards, including the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Sustained Excellence and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Outstanding Season in 2015, and was named BEST LARGER THEATER by Stage Scene LA in 2017. Community programs reach children, youth, families, and seniors, including underserved and disadvantaged groups.
No auditions are required for the Summer Youth Conservatory. One Conservatory student described the program by saying, “It gives you experience and trains you to be comfortable in front of an audience. It gives you an opportunity to reach your dreams.” A Conservatory parent noted a “wonderful range of stories, reflecting the diversity of our community, engaging and interactive for children.” Another student said, “The Conservatory helped me to feel a lot more confident,” and a 15-year-old high school student shared, “I found something inside myself that I didn't know existed.”
