Lakewood Budo Kai Martial Arts Classes offers training in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Okinawan Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito-Ha Karate. The program includes Children's Self-defense, Children's Jujitsu, Teen / Adult Jujitsu, Teen / Adult Karate, and a Women's Self-defense class. Students learn physical self-defense and the Traditions and Codes of Honor passed down for thousands of years, and are part of a traditional family of martial artists that trains to uphold leadership traits of commitment, courage, honesty, integrity, loyalty, and respect.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Children's Self-Defense Class meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm; Teen / Adult Jujitsu Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Fridays from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm; Teen / Adult Karate Class meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm; the Women's Self-Defense Class is a one-time three-hour class.

Lakewood Budo Kai was founded in May of 1979 and has taught martial arts and self-defense for over forty-five years. It is recognized as one of Southern California’s longest running traditional martial arts schools and is the longest running martial arts school in Long Beach, California. The name “Lakewood Budo Kai” literally translates to “The Lakewood School of Stopping Conflict,” and “Budo Kai” is used as a reminder that martial arts are learned not to fight, but to stop conflict. Following Samurai traditions, black belts at Lakewood Budo Kai are expected to be role models and a positive influence.
Lakewood Budo Kai is Veteran Owned and Operated and teaches two traditional martial arts in separate classes so students can learn the arts in their truest forms. The Children’s Self-Defense Class is specially designed for children ages 6 to 12, the Teen / Adult Jujitsu Class is for ages 13 and up, the Teen / Adult Karate Class is for ages 13 and up, and the Women’s Self-Defense Class is specifically for women and taught by qualified instructors.
The leadership team includes Jim Kelton, Shihan, Dojo Founder, in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Shorin Ryu Karate, Kodenkan Judo, and Iai; Russell Kelley, Sensei, Head Instructor, in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Shorin Ryu Karate; Dr. Jeffrey H Smith, Shihan, Instructor, in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Kodenkan Judo; Jose Solorio, Sensei, Instructor, in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Shorin Ryu Karate; and William “Bill” Senner, Junior Instructor, in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Shorin Ryu Karate.
Classes are taught through the City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation, and Marine, and Lakewood Budo Kai has been recognized in the Community Newsletter of the City of Long Beach. Lakewood Budo Kai has received commendations from a former Governor of California and two former Mayors of the City of Long Beach in 2009 and 2019. It has also been recognized in local video and print media, including a Children’s Jujitsu Class Video, a Student Testimonial Video, an Instructor Highlight Video, and the Community Newsletter of the City of Long Beach. The stated vision is to provide traditional martial arts training and development through strong relationships between instructors, black belts, and students, and the mission is to build a martial arts school that supports the growth and successful advancement of students by providing training and facilitating personal development.
