About

Young Scientists Camp gives campers a chance to do hands-on science investigations, Cool Chemistry experiments, dissections, and other experiments and crafts. Campers also go on field trips on campus, including campus field trips to the shark and marine labs, and work hands on with STEM activities.

• Ages: 7–15 years old
• Schedule: Young Scientists Camp is a two-week program

Since the year 2000, more than 4,200 campers have attended Young Scientists Camp and spent time learning science and learning to think like a scientist. The program takes place at California State University Long Beach (CSULB), where campers meet CSULB scientists and work in the college's science laboratories on a college campus. The teaching staff includes area teachers and CSULB future teachers, and the camp is taught by real elementary school teachers with multiple college students to help each class. The program states that all students, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, who are interested in Young Scientists Camp, are welcome. The camp’s mission states that science and science related fields open doors for the future.

Young Scientists Camp also hosts SEE US Succeed!, a summer science camp program for Long Beach Unified students experiencing homelessness, and there is an option to make a donation to support campers for SEE US Succeed!. One parent of a 4th grader shared that their child loved the camp and especially the many Cool Chemistry experiments, and that the child has already asked to attend next summer. Another parent of a 5th grader noted that this was their child’s second year, that the child did activities like dissection and many experiments, and that the child enjoyed getting to know other camp participants. A parent of a 2nd grade camper reported that their child learned about habitats through fun activities and crafts, went on campus field trips to the shark and marine labs, and made new friends who share her passion for science. A parent of a 4th grade camper described that their child collaborates with other students, works hands on with STEM activities, and learns many new concepts based on NGSS over multiple summers. Another parent described Young Scientists Camp as a wonderful opportunity for students to be enriched by science education on a college campus, and a parent of a high school physics camper shared that their daughter became more confident about physics in her high school classroom after attending camp.
