About

The Sewing Lab Summer Camps offer summer sewing camps, kids sewing classes, sewing classes, and workshops that focus on sewing projects. The program also offers sewing parties, alterations classes, and mixed classes of beginner and more advanced students, with projects based on skill level. At The Sewing Lab, students sew on top-of-the-line Janome sewing machines, and for most classes all materials are included.

• Ages: 8–16 years old
• Schedule: Sewing classes run in 4-week sessions with two-hour classes each week, with new sessions beginning monthly, and summer sewing camps are offered in 8 weeks with multiple time slots per week.
• Price: $500 (3 hour sewing party)

All kids sewing classes have small group sizes with a maximum of 10 kids, and machines are provided for everyone to use in kids classes with fabrics included. Kids sewing classes are approved for charter schools through Blue Ridge. The Sewing Lab also offers adult beginner sewing classes and adult next level sewing classes, as well as 3 hour sewing parties for both kids and adults.

All classes are taught by industry professionals with degrees in fashion or related fields. The founder, Camilla Wright (she/her), received a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design with an emphasis on Sewing and has worked in the fashion industry as a fashion designer for companies like Mudd Jeans, Skechers, and Soundgirl. Ms. Camilla founded The Sewing Lab in 2014. The Sewing Lab is a certified Janome dealer and a premium Arrow dealer. The stated mission is: “Learning how to sew should be fun and ‘no-pressure’ and you should have lots of fun while learning!”

Parent and student feedback includes comments that Camilla is described as passionate about teaching sewing and treating everyone with respect and kindness, and that one parent reports The Sewing Lab has been the best experience for her daughter and that her daughter looks forward to class every week. Adult students report starting with zero sewing knowledge and completing projects such as a drawstring pouch, pajama shorts, a two-sided canvas tote bag with pockets, and a vintage 1960s dress in the adult beginner class. Other testimonials describe detailed instruction on sewing machines, threading, bobbins, patterns, how to read patterns, how to choose fabric, and how to trim and use patterns, and mention that teachers such as Kelsie and Cian are knowledgeable and personable.
