About
Academy Museum Workshops and Screenings includes a Tactile Filmmaking Workshop: Direct-on-Film Animation. In this workshop, participants make a camera-less movie by animating directly on 16mm film, experimenting with simple materials such as markers, tape, pushpins, and ink to create moving-image collages on celluloid film. They then edit the individual strips together and screen them through a 16mm projector as a community-made film, and use celluloid film strips to create a keychain to take home.
• Price: All workshops are free with museum admission and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Museum admission is free for youth 17 and under.
The program takes place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is the largest museum in the world devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking. The museum features an accessible screenings series, Studio Ghibli’s PONYO exhibition with more than 100 rare objects, Jaws: The Exhibition as its largest exhibition dedicated to a single film, and Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital as its first permanent exhibition. Gallery Spotlights at the museum feature special guests who bring insights to the exhibitions, and the community-made film created from workshop participants’ animated 16mm strips is part of the workshop experience.
