After 'Cool is a weekly afterschool arts education and enrichment program for local students in grades 2–8. The program includes theatre, storytelling, public speaking, and critical thinking activities. It also includes Spanish-language work.
• Ages: 7–13 years old
• Schedule: Weekly afterschool classes beginning the week of August 19, 2025
• Price: After ‘Cool is offered at no cost to families (value is $1500 per student). This $1500 scholarship is made possible through donations.
After ‘Cool offers three classes for different grade levels: one for grades 2–3, one for grades 4–5, and one for grades 6–8. Classes for grades 2–3 meet on Tuesdays from 4:15pm to 5:15pm, and classes for grades 4–5 meet on Thursdays from 4:15pm to 5:30pm. Classes for grades 6–8 meet on Fridays from 4:15pm to 5:30pm. The program serves 150 students every school year at no cost to families. The curriculum is aligned with the California Content Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts. Classes are taught by highly experienced teaching artists. The program includes deep and powerful teaching in the arts and is recognized as a leader in theatre for young audiences. Se habla español.
The mission of After ‘Cool is to engage, educate, and provoke young people and their families with excellent theatre and arts education. The $1500 scholarship for each student is made possible through donations by The USC Good Neighbors Campaign, The Green Foundation, The Dwight Stuart Youth Fund, The Carl and Roberta Deutsch Foundation, The Rosenthal Family Foundation, The California Arts Council, and The Artistic Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Youth. After ‘Cool is part of an organization that also offers national and international touring.
One parent shared that this program has provided a place of joy for their daughter and given her something to look forward to during the pandemic. The parent reported that their daughter was excited every day of Summer ‘Cool, that her passion continues to grow, and that through After ‘Cool she has become part of a community where she belongs and is accepted. The parent also noted that their daughter enjoys the adults, the activities, and the other actors, and that they have heard thoughtful, mindful, and engaging conversations that have taught her and promoted creativity. The parent described 24th Street Theatre as a blessing to their family.
