United in Harmony’s Camp Harmony offers two overnight sleepaway camps, as well as other in-person programming throughout the year, for children experiencing poverty. United in Harmony serves children ages 7 to 12 experiencing poverty in Los Angeles and the surrounding counties, and partners with more than 15 shelters, agencies, and schools, including Title I schools, transitional housing shelters, and other community-based organizations, to bring in campers from diverse areas of need. Around 800 underserved children attend camp annually, with 350 counselors and 250 adult support staff volunteering each year, contributing to more than 50,000 volunteer hours in 2024.

Camp Harmony provides three hot meals daily and promises campers “all the love they can take and all the food they need,” and 300 new sleeping bags are distributed to campers every summer session, along with 1,500 sweatshirts and t-shirts annually. Counselors from more than 35 surrounding high schools, ranging from 10th–12th grade, apply to serve at Camp Harmony as Harmony leaders and role models, and they are asked to underwrite their own camp expenses through a fee payment. Over 100 volunteer counselors participate in United in Harmony’s Leadership Program, which meets twice monthly throughout the school year and helps them maintain relationships with campers through monthly engagements with partner agencies, and 15–20 Unit Heads return to Camp Harmony from college each session.

United in Harmony was established in 1989, and since then has served over 20,000 children experiencing poverty. Its mission is to provide children experiencing poverty with hope and opportunities. Each year, United in Harmony also hosts a Holiday Party for more than 200 children from various agency partners, where every child goes home with new toys, clothing, books, and more.

The organization’s leadership includes Executive Director Lindsay Schwartz; Board of Directors members Andrew Bank, Katie Chaudry, Tracy Curran, Drew Furedi, Wendie Goode Dox, Aaron Leff, Shana Passman, Doug Praw, and Ronna Slutske; and an Executive Committee with Adam Slutske (Board President), Jordan Passman (Vice President), Carol Goldberg (Treasurer), Lorri Herman (Secretary), Nicholas Melvoin (Camp Director), and Brett Marz (Director of Operations), along with Administrative Assistant Azalia Martinez-Cruz. Adult Support Staff volunteer at Harmony programs and camps, overseeing activities and logistics and stepping in to work directly with a camper or cabin when needed.

Testimonials from participants describe learning what it takes to put on activities that make underprivileged kids happy, returning as counselors after having been campers, and feeling motivated to continue to give back. Other testimonials describe Camp Harmony as a place that made campers feel like they had gone on vacation during winter break, a place that showed children there is a world where they can be themselves, and an experience that past campers and volunteers describe as meaningful and life changing for themselves and others.
