United in Harmony – Camp Harmony offers more than 30 different activities each day, including activities in art, sports, personal health, and personal challenge. Each session includes a spectacular end-of-session carnival. During the year, the program also hosts a Holiday Party with fun, food, crafts, gifts, and a visit from Santa.

United in Harmony is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that was established in 1989, and United in Harmony’s Camp Harmony is a non-sectarian, non-profit sleepaway camp. United in Harmony’s mission is to provide children experiencing poverty with hope and opportunities. United in Harmony serves children ages 7 to 12 experiencing poverty in Los Angeles and the surrounding counties and partners with Title I schools, transitional housing shelters, and other community-based organizations, with 15+ shelters, agencies, and schools sending children to camp. Each session, Camp Harmony hosts over 400 campers from underserved areas in and around Los Angeles County, and around 800 under-served children attend camp annually. Campers arrive by bus to meet their specially chosen counselors, and three to four counselors per cabin lead groups of 8–10 campers. Camp Harmony offers two overnight sleepaway camps, as well as other in-person programming throughout the year, for children experiencing poverty, and 3 hot meals are served daily.
All counselors are high school volunteers who serve as positive role models, with counselors from more than 35 surrounding high schools applying to serve at Camp Harmony. Students in grades 10–12 serve as leaders and inspirational role models for the campers, and counselors are asked to underwrite their own camp expenses through a fee payment. Counselors, ranging from 10th–12th grade, participate in summer and winter sessions as Harmony leaders, and over 20,000 children experiencing poverty have been served since United in Harmony’s establishment in 1989. Over 100 volunteer counselors participate in United in Harmony’s Leadership Program, a post-camp initiative that helps them maintain relationships with campers through monthly engagements with partner agencies, and the Leadership Program meets twice monthly throughout the school year. Fifteen to twenty Unit Heads return to camp from college each session, and Unit Heads return to Camp Harmony from college across the country to continue the mission they adopted in high school. Adult Support Staff volunteer at Harmony programs and camps, overseeing activities and logistics, and Support Staff step in to work directly with a camper or cabin when needed. Each year, United in Harmony hosts a Holiday Party for more than 200 children from various agency partners, every child at the Holiday Party goes home with new toys, clothing, books, and more, and this special Holiday Party event welcomes volunteers of all ages.
United in Harmony is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Camp Harmony distributes 300 new sleeping bags to campers every summer session and 1,500 sweatshirts and t-shirts annually. Approximately 350 counselors and 250 adult support staff volunteer annually, and more than 50,000 volunteer hours were served in 2024. Testimonials from participants and volunteers describe Camp Harmony as meaningful for both campers and counselors, including experiences of returning as counselors after having been campers and staying connected with campers beyond the camp sessions.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Lindsay Schwartz. The Board of Directors includes Andrew Bank, Katie Chaudry, Tracy Curran, Drew Furedi, Wendie Goode Dox, Aaron Leff, Shana Passman, Doug Praw, and Ronna Slutske. The Executive Committee includes Adam Slutske, Board President; Jordan Passman, Vice President; Carol Goldberg, Treasurer; and Lorri Herman, Secretary. Additional leadership and staff roles include Nicholas Melvoin, Camp Director; Brett Marz, Director of Operations; and Administrative Assistant Azalia Martinez-Cruz.
