Conga Kids offers a wide range of dance, music, and sports-based activities, including Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Hip-Hop, Charleston, Bollywood, the Conga Slide, Hula, Lamban, Son Cubano, Authentic Jazz, Rock 'n’ Roll, and Go-Go. The program also includes combination offerings such as Salsa & Soccer, Hip-Hop & Basketball, and 70’s Disco & Football. Its mission is to promote social and emotional well-being and inclusive practices through dance, music, and sports.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: In-School Residency of 10–20 lessons at 30–50 minutes per class; 60-minute Discover the Diaspora assemblies; Bridge the Generations with five 2-hour lessons; Expanded Learning Social Dance & Music with 20 lessons (one per week for 20 weeks or two per week for 10 weeks); Conga Beatz with 12 or 20 lessons
Since 2016, Conga Kids has offered programs such as an In-School Residency for TK–5th grade, Discover the Diaspora 60-minute interactive music and dance assemblies for the whole school, and Bridge the Generations as a programming opportunity for the entire school, families, and community. Additional offerings include an Expanded Learning Social Dance & Music program for all grade levels and Conga Beatz, which integrates music, movement, and social-emotional learning into sports. The curriculum is inclusive and highlights dances of the African Diaspora, with a focus on teaching diversity, equity, inclusivity, and social and emotional learning strategies.
As of 2024, Conga Kids is active in 17 school districts and several community organizations, including Boys & Girls Club and YMCA, reaching approximately 60,000 children annually in Los Angeles and Orange County. The leadership team includes President and Founder Brad Gluckstein, Chief Operating Officer Gil Solis, Executive Director Barbara Garcia Vera, and staff in roles such as human resources, programs management, operations programs management, and programs coordination. The board of directors includes Brad Gluckstein (President), Gil Solis (Treasurer), Barbara Garcia Vera (Secretary), and board members Greg Bell, Richard Bruno, Jon Dishell, Triston Ezidore, Liliana Perez, Rev. Kelvin Sauls, and Roderick Seamster, MD.
Principal Karen Reynolds of Short Avenue Elementary School describes Conga Kids as empowering children through dance by boosting their self-confidence and self-expression and fostering a sense of accomplishment and personal growth. Parent Doug Penty notes that his child’s participation involved months of dedicated dancing and that the program taught more than dance moves, including life skills, while also being enjoyable.
