• Ages: 5–18 years old
The Artsy Backyard was created in 2018. The studio offers art and painting workshops in different mediums for all ages and levels, with all needed supplies provided for in-person classes and mobile events. The program also offers private events and corporate events, as well as options to host private classes in a family’s own backyard.
The Artsy Backyard was created by Ronit Rozen, who holds a Masters in Education and worked as a school teacher for over 25 years with elementary and middle school-aged children. The leadership team includes Ronit Rozen, Heather Clark, Natalie Pellegrini, and Elle Reck. Heather Clark is a self-taught artist working in various mediums, Natalie Pellegrini is a Los Angeles–based ceramicist and potter, and Elle Reck is a Los Angeles–based artist with a BFA in Experimental Animation from California Institute of the Arts.
The mission of The Artsy Backyard states that the program embraces creativity and self-expression through art, recognizes that every artist has a unique style and point of view, and aims to guide students through techniques, methods, and mediums that let them explore new means of artistic expression in a safe, judgment-free space. The mission also states that artists of every age and ability level are welcomed to discover the joys of creation, develop new skills, and connect with like-minded peers. Ronit opened The Artsy Backyard to provide a space for creativity and expression within her community.
Parent and participant feedback includes comments that a child attended art camp and brought home “fantastic pieces” and chose to continue doing art at home afterward. Another family described visiting with four children and “absolutely loved it,” calling it a great way to spend quality time together. Other feedback notes that there are many options and media to explore from classes to open studio time, and that one child “loves the Art Class,” is “learning more every week,” and that Ronit is patient and cares for her students.
