About

HAWKs offers day camps, after-school programs, weekend hikes, out-in-the-field trips, and birthday parties that include games and activities that focus on nature. Children take part in hiking adventure field trips, Red Tail Treks, arts and crafts, making leaf imprint fossils, building butterfly nectar feeders, creating native seed bombs, knotting together sticky bracelets from found materials, and creating a nature journal. The program is fully drop-off, and explorers are signed in and out each day by caregivers or authorized adults.

• Ages: 5–16 years old
• Schedule: Single-session and week-long adventures offered June–August, during school breaks, and on special weekends; After School Adventures available all year round; birthday parties available select weekends all year
• Price: Need-based, sliding scale scholarships may be available and vary by location

Programs take place in the field and often involve hiking between locations, and if weather becomes unsafe, programming shifts to pre-planned indoor locations such as nature centers or makerspaces. HAWKs runs year-round in a wide range of weather conditions, as long as it is safe to do so, and families are asked to send explorers dressed for the day’s conditions with appropriate layers and gear. Red Tail Treks provide a more intensive and immersive single-day adventure for older explorers ages 11–16, and some activities include chances to connect with bug and animal species, including friendly praying mantises. The mission of HAWKs is to offer primarily outdoor programs that encourage children’s sense of wonder about the natural world, familiarize them with local plants and animals, and teach the fundamentals of hiking, trail safety, and Leave No Trace (LNT) while focusing on a deep sense of connection to the outdoors. Educators are certified in CPR and Wilderness Medicine, and the educator team includes botanists, environmental scientists, ecologists, wildlife experts, biologists, environmentalists, bug experts, native plant experts, and early childhood educators. The program is described as a refreshing, simple program meant to help kids develop a better sense of themselves and of the world through first-hand experience.
