About
HAWKs offers primarily outdoor hiking adventure programs that include Day Camps, After School Adventures, Out-In-The-Field Trips, Red Tail Treks, and Birthday Parties. Explorers take part in hiking adventure field trips, games and activities that focus on nature, arts & crafts, and hands-on projects such as making their own leaf imprint fossils, building butterfly nectar feeders, creating native seed bombs, knotting together sticky bracelets from found materials, and creating a nature journal of their findings.
• Ages: 5–16 years old
The program’s mission is to encourage children’s sense of wonder about the natural world, familiarize them with local plants and animals, and teach them the fundamentals of hiking, trail safety, and Leave No Trace (LNT) while instilling a deep sense of connection to the outdoors. Programs take place in the field and often involve hiking between locations, and HAWKs runs year-round in a wide range of weather conditions, as long as it is safe to do so; if weather becomes unsafe, programming may shift to pre-planned indoor locations such as nature centers or makerspaces. HAWKs is a fully drop-off program led by trained educators, and explorers are signed in and out each day by caregivers or authorized adults. Families are asked to send explorers dressed for the day’s conditions with appropriate layers and gear.
The educators are described as experienced and trained naturalists, including botanists, environmental scientists, ecologists, wildlife experts, biologists, environmentalists, bug experts, native plant experts, and early childhood educators. Educators are certified in CPR and Wilderness Medicine. Need-based, sliding scale scholarships may be available and vary by location. Cancellations made 14 or more days before the start of a program are eligible for a full refund or account credit, minus any non-refundable processing fees; cancellations made within 14 days of the program start date are non-refundable but may be eligible for an account credit at the discretion of the local HAWKs region; if HAWKs cancels a program due to weather, safety concerns, or unforeseen circumstances, families receive a full refund or credit.
