SGLA was founded by Kate Hutter Mason after she developed the idea over 10 years while serving as Artistic Director of L.A. Contemporary Dance Company. She purchased the property in 2019 and renovated it for a grand opening in March 2020, and by 2022 the space was hosting performances, rehearsals, workshops, classes, and open-air markets. SGLA states that it is an uncurated community arts space where people gather and create, and that it exists to inspire, to provide a sense of belonging, and to form community through the arts. It recognizes and values its presence on the native lands of the Tongva, Chumash, and Kizh nations and states that it hopes to pay homage to them in the creative, cultural work conducted there. The organization produces free and low cost events to engage with the surrounding neighborhood and to highlight artistic voices in Los Angeles, with a focus on multi-generational, multi-cultural, and diverse artistic expression and storytelling.
