The studio is led by Michael Knowles and Kathy Huynh-Knowles. Michael obtained his 1st degree black belt in Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1994 and his 2nd degree black belt in 1996, his 3rd degree black belt in April 2012, and became a Certified Instructor of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan in April 2016. Kathy is a 3rd Degree Black Belt. The Knowles family have been residents of Larchmont Village in Los Angeles since 2012, and they opened their studio in 2016. They later acquired a 4300 sq ft building on Western Avenue to house the studio permanently.
The program describes karate as combining the mental and physical, coordinating mind and body to achieve balance and harmony. It states that gender and age are not boundaries to practicing karate and describes karate as a way of life to become stronger, healthier, happier, and more peaceful people. The mission also states that Michael believes a teacher’s job is to provide a positive, supportive, and respectful learning environment that encourages students to develop the confidence and self-awareness to trust themselves, which he describes as the foundation to inner peace and happiness.
The Knowles family describe greatly enjoying the charm, friendly neighborhood feel, and vibrant spirit of Larchmont Village. Tuesday, a 4-year-old Lab/Cattle Dog/Pit Terrier rescue, is a constant fixture at the studio and likes being around the students. Phantom, a 6-month-old tuxedo cat, is described as Tuesday’s best friend and a great escape artist.
