Los Angeles Mermaid School – Mermaid Training Party gives guests a full mermaid transformation that includes in-water mermaid training, mermaid glam makeovers with glitter gel, water-resistant glitter tattoos, a magical mermaid naming ceremony, and a fabric tail photo shoot. In the pool, a certified Finstructor leads swimming forwards, floating, swimming backwards in kid-safe monofins, self-rescue drills, underwater tricks, and a team-based choreography challenge. Out of the water, guests take part in a master class in mermaid poses, use bright fabric mermaid tails and an inflatable shell seat with mermaid costuming for photos, and finish with a Happy Birthday song and cake time.

The experience is designed for up to 8 guests per instructor and includes 1 certified Finstructor, 1 assistant instructor or party helper, 8 rental kid-safe monofins and goggles, and an inflatable shell seat with mermaid costuming for photos. Monofins are provided during in-water training, and bright fabric mermaid tails are used for the post-swim modeling class, with guests allowed to bring their own tails or monofins subject to instructor approval; instructors may take away any monofin or tail if it is seen as endangering a person or if the person is not strong enough to use it. Participants must be independent swimmers capable of swimming for 1 hour without assistance, at least 4 feet tall, and 9 years of age or older, and the host is responsible for arranging a lifeguard and keeping any pool fence in place to secure the pool when needed. It is recommended that the pool be heated to 88–92°F for children’s comfort, and guests are advised to bring sunblock, a change of clothing, towels, a secure swimsuit (one-piece preferred or a two-piece with a sun shirt), sandals, and their own goggles if they have a pair they like; bra tops or accessories are not provided.
The program is distinguished for having a Lifeguard Instructor and a PADI Mermaid Instructor Trainer on staff, and the lead mermaid became the first PADI Mermaid Instructor Trainer in the Continental USA in 2020. Mermaid Naiya has been approved to receive the American Red Cross Certificate of Merit Lifesaving Award, a national level award signed by the President of the USA. The program has community involvement that includes a connection to the Jewish community in Los Angeles through lifeguards and their work towards tolerance, training focused on deaf and hearing impaired community members and the use of ASL, an Aqua ASL aquarium show program showcasing ASL, performers and staff from every continent excluding Antarctica, and virtual programming that helped school age children separated from friends during the COVID pandemic.
