About
Neighborhood Music School offers private instruction in piano, violin, viola, cello, percussion, guitar, trumpet, flute, clarinet, saxophone, ukulele, and voice. Students can also take part in movie nights, concerts, picnics, special events, field trips, and performance activities such as Showtime, in-person Student Recitals, and Virtual Recitals.
• Schedule: Lesson and activity times are available Monday–Friday from 12pm–8pm and Saturday from 9am–4pm
• Price: Neighborhood Music School provides low cost/high quality one-on-one music instruction to those who need it most
Founded in 1914, Neighborhood Music School states that its mission is to not only teach music, but to help students develop the joys, wonders and skills that passively arise from a multi-faceted music education. The school serves as an anchor to the community, a bridge to cultural exchange and opportunity, and an artistic home to students, teaching artists, families, alumni, and new friends. In addition to music instruction, it opens its doors to the community for movie nights, concerts, picnics, special events, and field trips, and students, teaching artists, and ensemble classes are often invited to perform at community events throughout the year.
Students have many performance opportunities, including monthly Showtime, four in-person Student Recitals, and four Virtual Recitals each year. During the last week of each month, each student participates in Showtime by gathering in the parlor for the last ten minutes of every half-hour lesson to perform informally. The school’s building was retrofitted and restored after the 1987 earthquake with support from eleven foundations and the contracting skills of Nicholas Akers, a music-lover and prize-winning restoration contractor in Pasadena.
