Founded in 2007 by former Ramona Gardens neighborhood resident Maria “Lou” Calanche, Legacy LA Youth Programs has continued operating since 2007. Its mission states that, founded in Ramona Gardens, Legacy LA empowers youth and families in Boyle Heights and surrounding neighborhoods to break systemic cycles of multigenerational poverty and trauma through leadership, healing, and community-driven change to build resilient and equitable neighborhoods. Legacy LA reports that its Student Success Programs have a unanimous success rate, 100% of high school seniors applied to and were accepted to a college or university, 100 youth completed a workforce training internship, and 75% of high school students improved their grades. Legacy LA also reports that 28% of its staff are Legacy LA alumni and that more than 400 youth participated in development programming last year.

Legacy LA states that its programs develop advocacy for self and community, provide academic intervention beyond the classroom, and support and empower families and community members. It also states that youth programs develop leadership capacity, provide academic intervention and personal development, and support youth in achieving their dreams, while family support programming offers ongoing support to parents, creates caring and safe spaces for loved ones, and focuses on revitalizing and enriching home life.

One Legacy LA member, Michelle C., age 17, states that Legacy LA has many programs that help high school students, and that staff helped her step-by-step with college applications. Another current student states feeling safe, welcome, and not judged at Legacy LA, and expresses gratitude for support during a time of need. A high school case manager and education advocate, Alina C., describes Legacy LA as a home and a safe and brave space for many young people, and reports having seen students receive high school diplomas, grow into leaders, reach goals, and “dream big.”
