About
Pathways LA West Hollywood Preschool uses a play-based curriculum that focuses on the individual needs of each child. The program bases its work on each child’s age and developmental level, individual needs and interests, and the family’s social and cultural background, and builds its curriculum on the interests of children as they emerge. Teachers provide developmentally appropriate activities and materials that support children’s social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive development, and meals are served family style and used as a time to practice social behaviors, conversation skills, nutrition habits, and attitudes that discourage food waste.

Pathways LA West Hollywood Preschool was established in 1991 in partnership between Pathways LA and the City of West Hollywood and has been in partnership with the City of West Hollywood for over 25 years. The program has prepared over 1,000 young scholars of diverse abilities and needs for academic success and targets low-income families with children ages 2½ to 5 years who live, work, and/or participate in a training or educational program within the City of West Hollywood. Eligibility and requirements are based on income, family size, and need, with need defined as employment, vocational training, seeking employment, or “in-transition” housing, and enrollment is focused on families currently receiving or who have received CalWORKs in the past 24 months. The program is licensed under License #191805765.
The program is committed to quality early care and education and to helping each child develop to their full potential. Pathways LA strengthens low income and vulnerable working families, promotes high quality early care and education services for children of all abilities, develops knowledgeable early care providers, and promotes economically resilient communities. The program views itself as a partner with parents in meeting the developmental needs of their children and emphasizes building a bridge between school and home.
Classrooms follow adult-to-child ratios of 1 adult to 4 children for children under 3 years old and 1 adult to 8 children for children 3–5 years old, with an average class size of 16. The program’s Nutrition Program provides free breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks, and all food meets the guidelines of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Staff work with parents to accommodate nutritional or cultural needs of each child.
The program strives to offer an environment where children develop healthy self-esteem, acquire positive communication skills, learn how to solve problems, make decisions that consider their own needs and the needs of others, gain an appreciation for diversity and difference, and develop a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. The program’s diverse environment is described as providing children with real-world experiences that help teach compassion, patience, and acceptance of others. One parent, Gabriela Flores, shared that for her children “it’s best for them to not only be in a safe environment but in an environment where they are growing and becoming more verbal and more independent.”
