Playgroup Los Angeles Waldorf Forest Playgroups offers outdoor classes where little ones and their parents or caregivers gather in a woodland area for weekly circle time in nature. Children and caregivers take part in simple songs, nature walks, family art projects, singing, storytelling, occasional crafting, and gentle hikes through diverse gardens and woodlands.
Playgroup LA was created and founded by Betsy Edelberg, “Miss Betsy,” a highly trained and experienced, credentialed child development teacher. Waldorf Early Childhood Education and other whole-child learning theories and philosophies form the basis for Playgroup LA curricula, and all classes are mixed-age and informed by Waldorf Early Childhood Education and developmental science. Classes are typically parent-child classes for babies through age six and can be uniquely tailored for any age group up to adults, and programs for children and parents take place in nature. Hosting a Playgroup LA class means organizing and inviting families to an outdoor class at a home, school, or child-friendly nature area, and a class can be a single day workshop or a series of classes. Acorns & Oaks is an outdoor parent-child program for babies, toddlers, and young children 5 years and younger with one caregiver, with circle time under the trees where families join together for singing, storytelling, and occasional crafting. County guidelines restrict enrollment, so space may be limited, and parent-child classes are now enrolling. Private parenting consults are available to support personalized parent reflection, renewal, repair, and education.
Miss Betsy is a child development specialist, professor, and parent and child educator who holds an M.S. in Family and Human Development, Magna Cum Laude, a B.A. in Child and Adolescent Development, Cum Laude, and an A.S. in Child Development and Early Childhood Education. She is doing doctoral research around parent-inclusive schooling and education and is a college professor in the field of child and adolescent development. She has formal training in Waldorf education and is certified in Children’s Yoga and Educational Kinesiology. The program’s mission states that childhood is a powerful formative force in life and that creative parent-child interactions, safe playmates, and warmth from a kind teacher under the open sky offer a great start. One parent shared, “Thank you for such lovely group experiences week after week. It adds so much joy to our whole family and stays with us throughout the week.”
