About
Taking the Reins offers experiences with horses at an urban farm through an equestrian program that includes horseback riding and caring for a horse herd. Participants take part in the Seed-to-Skillet gardening program, which involves planting and harvesting in a 1/4 acre onsite garden and cooking their harvest. The program also includes hands-on natural science instruction, animal husbandry, and opportunities for students to interact with and learn to care for sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks, horses, ponies, dogs, cats, and a burro, as well as tending to a flock of chickens. Taking the Reins also offers field trips, tours, workshops, classes for visiting students from LA schools and other youth non-profits, and invite-only tours of its facility and grounds.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday with afternoon and early evening hours, plus Saturday daytime hours, in six-week sessions
• Price: One session sponsorship is $500.00 every six weeks
Taking the Reins states its mission as advancing girl power through horsepower and inspiring youth through nature. The program serves under-resourced girls and the youth of Greater Los Angeles, teaches four pillars of Confidence, Leadership, Responsibility, and Teamwork, and uses a S.T.E.A.M.-based curriculum in both its Seed-to-Skillet program and Learning Center classes, which highlight ecology and environmental conservation and use the onsite garden as a living laboratory. Taking the Reins was selected as one of Subaru of Sherman Oaks' Hometown Charities for the 2025 Subaru Share the Love event, participated in Camp del Corazon’s + P.A.C.E Wellness Retreat, hosts visiting students from LA schools and other youth non-profits, and received a visit from Congresswoman Laura Friedman of California’s 30th District, who toured the barn and observed the equestrian and nature education programs.
