About

Taking the Reins offers horseback riding along with caring for a horse herd on an urban farm setting. Participants interact with and care for sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks, horses, ponies, dogs, and cats, and also tend to a flock of chickens and keep sheep and a burro happy. The program includes planting, harvesting, and gardening in a 1/4 acre onsite garden, cooking harvest from the garden, and taking part in S.T.E.A.M.-based classes, field trips, tours, workshops, and classes that highlight ecology and environmental conservation.

• Schedule: Sessions run every six weeks, with program hours Monday–Friday and weekend options.
• Price: One session is $500.00 every six weeks.

Taking the Reins includes a Seed-to-Skillet comprehensive gardening program that uses the 1/4 acre onsite garden as a living laboratory with a S.T.E.A.M.-based curriculum. The Animal Husbandry program involves multiple farm and companion animals, and the Learning Center offers S.T.E.A.M.-based classes and experiences. All programs are organized around four pillars: Confidence, Leadership, Responsibility, and Teamwork. The mission of Taking the Reins is to advance girl power through horsepower and inspire youth through nature, inspiring under-resourced girls to act with courage and confidence through experiences with horses and providing hands-on natural science instruction for the youth of Greater Los Angeles. The Executive Director is Dr. Jane Haven.

Taking the Reins has community involvement that includes being selected by Subaru of Sherman Oaks as one of its Hometown Charities for the 2025 Subaru Share the Love event. Capital Group | American Funders spent their Community Action Day at Taking the Reins, and Sprouts Farmers Market made an investment in the Seed-to-Skillet program. Taking the Reins hosts visiting students from Los Angeles schools and other youth non-profits and participates in the LA Business Journal’s Nonprofit + Corporate Citizenship symposium. Invite-only tours of the facility and grounds are also offered.
