Stella Adler opened her New York school in 1949, and Stella Adler Academy of Acting & Theatre – Los Angeles was founded in 1985. It is the original Los Angeles school founded by Stella Adler herself and is a non-profit arts organization. The Stella Adler Technique grew out of Stella Adler’s personal work with Konstantin Stanislavski. The Academy welcomes students from all over the world, and international students must attend full-time courses due to M-1 visa requirements. U.S. students may take part-time courses or enroll in the two-year program, and all classes count towards the two-year program, with short courses of study available for those unable to spend two years.

Stella Adler Academy of Acting & Theatre – Los Angeles states that it is dedicated to uplifting and enriching collective humanity through the dramatic arts and that it is driven by the belief that growth as an actor and growth as a person are the same. The Academy and Theatre states that it provides tools, training, and discipline to nurture and support actors who are committed to the art form and to a life of social engagement. In addition to its teaching center, the organization offers public programming and extensive community outreach, including free and low-cost performances for thousands of patrons as well as some of the city’s most under-served children, families, and senior citizens.

The leadership team includes John Jack Rodgers as Executive Director; Wendy Taylor-Smith as Administrative Director; Alex Aves as Director of Student Affairs and International Student Advisor; Nick Foran as Technical Director; and Carlo Figlio as International Student Advisor.
