The Modern Schoolhouse offers infant care through Transitional Kindergarten across five campuses and uses an in-house curriculum with weekly lessons built on monthly themes. The program includes Sign Language from Infancy, Zones of Regulation, and the Five Quotients of Development: IQ (Intelligence), EQ (Emotional), SQ (Spiritual), CQ (Creative), and AQ (Adversity). Families receive exclusive materials to reinforce learning at home, and the program emphasizes four relationship areas: Teacher to Child, Teacher to Parent, Teacher to Teacher, and Teacher to Administration. The program follows a whole-child philosophy with a research-backed curriculum and provides premier early childhood education across Los Angeles and the Bay Area.

The Modern Schoolhouse was founded in 2020 by Sue Athwal, who serves as Founder and Director and is also referred to as Founder and Owner. All staff hold significant qualifications in early childhood education and complete rigorous in-house certificated training. Teachers are CPR-First Aid certified, Mandated Reporters, and Live Scan and DOJ cleared with the State of California. The founder holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, a degree in Liberal Arts and Psychology, a Childcare Program Director’s Permit, and serves as a Positive Discipline Parent Educator & Coach. The founder is also a Newborn Care Specialist, Preschool Curriculum Developer, Published Author, Former NCAA Athlete, Make-A-Wish Foundation Volunteer, and Big Brothers & Big Sisters Alumni. The program’s stated mission is: “Each child is capable and rich in potential. We focus on the whole child — academically, socially, and ethically.”

Parent feedback includes comments that The Modern Schoolhouse’s approach to learning and structured play made a visible difference in a child’s development, with growth seen earlier than expected. One founding family shared that their daughter attended from 18 months through graduation, and another parent described The Modern Schoolhouse as more than a well-organized preschool and as a community they feel part of.
