About
Tinkering Camp gives campers time in a workshop to learn tools, build big, and turn scraps and recyclables into personalized artworks. Campers use hand tools, power tools, scissors, and power drills with tool technique and safety training. Each day includes rapid design challenges, brainstorming methods, and time to design and build a big afternoon project, and campers work together to create huge, amazing projects and go outside each day for lunch and active play.

Tinkering Camp is part of programs run by Rediscover Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has supported creative expression through hands-on making and sustainable practices since 2004. Rediscover Center states that youth in its programs make everything from cardboard puppets to working go carts and 25 foot roller coasters, and campers work with upcycled materials and scraps and recyclables to create personalized artworks and large projects. The program uses a 5:1 camper to facilitator ratio, offers sliding scale financial aid at multiple income levels, and accepts Home School funds for One Day Tinkering Camps. Rediscover Center also operates public youth makerspaces that host K–6 camps, all-ages workshops, and weekend family maker sessions, and it brings hands-on STEAM education to youth across Los Angeles County through camps, school programs, field trips, and community events while working with local households and businesses to “rediscover” materials that would have been thrown away.
Rediscover Center reports that no one with open toed shoes, loose hair, or loose clothing is allowed in the workshop or shop. One camp parent, Pia, reports that staff are caring and ready to help bring her son's wildest dreams to life and that his creations have become conversation pieces at home. Another camp parent, Naz, reports that Ben's creativity and skills have exceeded expectations and that he has made many objects for the house, including a chair he made himself.
