About
Tumbleweed Day Camp offers an unplugged summer of play, friendship, and adventure, with a focus on exploring, playing, and unplugging from technology. The program is 100% unplugged, with no screens, no texting, and no video games, and staff focus on play and supporting positive play outdoors as their number one job. Included transportation and popsicles every Thursday and Friday are part of the camp experience, and all visitors must check in with front gate security during camp sessions and be verified before entering.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: Office open Monday–Friday 9:00am–5:00pm from September to June; during Summer Camp Season, staff can be reached from 7:30am to 5:30pm; during Winter Camp, they can be reached until dismissal, usually no later than 4:30pm
Tumbleweed Day Camp has been building happiness since 1954, and for over 70 years it has been described as an oasis, a summer dream, and a haven for childhood adventure. The leadership team includes Owner/Directors Andy Kimmelman and Liz Kimmelman, Camp Director and CIT Program Director Brooks McCall, and Registration, Parties and Events staff member Ariannah White. One parent described it as “a camp that is a real camp, something for every kid with the most wonderful traditions. A great place to escape LA. THE BEST,” and another parent shared that “all three of my kids said that this is their most favorite camp!”
The camp states that exploring, playing, and unplugging from technology are essential ingredients for joy, growth, and connection. Tumbleweed Day Camp acknowledges that it is on the ancestral land of the Gabrielino-Tongva Indian Tribe and encourages financial contributions to the Tataviam Land Conservancy and the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy. It also encourages campers, families, neighbors, and staff to learn more about the Tongva/Gabrieleno and Chumash Tribes, and lists resources including the Native American Heritage Commission of California, Kuruvungna Springs in West Los Angeles, Chumash Indian Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Wishtoyo Village in Malibu, and The Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.
