About
Tumbleweed Day Camp offers an unplugged summer of play, friendship, and adventure, with no screens, texting, or video games. The program focuses on exploring, questioning, investigating, and observing, and staff state that supporting positive play outdoors is their number one job. Campers are provided with popsicles every Thursday and Friday, and transportation is included.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: Office open Monday–Friday 9:00am–5:00pm from September to June; extended phone availability during Summer Camp Season from 7:30am–5:30pm and during Winter Camp until dismissal, usually no later than 4:30pm
Tumbleweed Day Camp states that it has been building happiness since 1954 and describes itself as an oasis and haven for childhood adventure for over 70 years. The mission statement says that exploring, playing, and unplugging from technology are considered essential ingredients for joy, growth, and connection. The leadership team includes Owner/Director Andy Kimmelman, Owner/Director Liz Kimmelman, Camp Director and CIT Program Director Brooks McCall, and Registration, Parties and Events staff member Ariannah White.
The camp acknowledges that it is on the ancestral land of the Gabrielino-Tongva Indian Tribe and encourages financial contributions to the Tataviam Land Conservancy and the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy. It encourages campers, families, neighbors, and staff to learn more about the Tongva/Gabrieleno and Chumash Tribes and references the Native American Heritage Commission of California, Kuruvungna Springs in West Los Angeles, Chumash Indian Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Wishtoyo Village in Malibu, and The Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe. During camp sessions, all visitors are required to check in with front gate security and be verified before entering, and the camp instructs families not to use Apple Maps for directions to its address because it will send users to a hiking trail above the campus.
Parent feedback includes one description of Tumbleweed Day Camp as “a camp that is a real camp, something for every kid with the most wonderful traditions” and “a great place to escape LA,” and another parent notes that all three of their children said it is their “most favorite camp.”
