About
USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center Programs offer STEM programs and activities that include project-based experiences. These programs take place through the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center at the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering.
For 40 years, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering has collaborated with K-12 schools, teachers, and students to strengthen STEM pathways that broaden college and career options. The central mission of the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center is to expand opportunities in STEM for youth, families, and schools in the Greater Los Angeles area. The center provides STEM programs and activities locally and regionally to K-12 students, teachers, families, and communities, and facilitates and engages K-12 STEM education networks. Its programs and research-based interventions offer project-based experiences that support the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and serve the nation’s urgent need for a STEM-ready workforce. The center also provides opportunities for USC students to engage in K-12 STEM outreach through volunteering and employment, and it has a mission to foster the curiosity of youth, families, and schools to explore AI's challenges and opportunities through the lenses of justice and equity in daily lives and local communities.
A CS@SC parent thanked the program for the time, energy, finances, and care brought to the community on behalf of South LA parents. A SHINE student reported that their SHINE experience reinforced their interest in STEM, specifically electrical engineering, by learning theoretical principles in electromagnetics and applying them to a real-life model. A BOTS teacher stated that the BOTS program helped them move to the next phase of implementing computer science in their classroom and expressed strong appreciation for the opportunity. A MESA student from the USC Class of 2019 shared that MESA increased their interest in engineering and their goal of attending USC, and that through MESA they gained skills such as teambuilding, leadership, and engineering processes before later being accepted to USC.
