About
USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center Programs are offered through the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. The programs and research-based interventions include project-based experiences that support the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards, and they foster the curiosity of youth, families, and schools to explore AI's challenges and opportunities through the lenses of justice and equity in daily lives and local communities. These programs also involve USC students in K-12 STEM outreach through volunteering and employment.
For 40 years, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering has collaborated with K-12 schools, teachers, and students to strengthen STEM pathways that broaden college and career options. The central mission of the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center is to expand opportunities in STEM for youth, families, and schools in the Greater Los Angeles area, and to serve the nation’s urgent need for a STEM-ready workforce. The Center provides STEM programs and activities locally and regionally to K-12 students, teachers, families, and communities and facilitates and engages K-12 STEM education networks. One parent from the CS@SC program thanked the Center for the time, energy, finances, and care brought to the community on behalf of South LA parents. A SHINE student described learning theoretical principles in electromagnetics and applying them to a real-life model as very intriguing. A BOTS teacher reported that the BOTS program supported moving to the next phase of implementing computer science in the classroom. A MESA student, later USC Class of 2019, stated that MESA increased their interest in engineering and their goal of attending USC, and that they gained skills such as teambuilding, leadership, and engineering processes through MESA.
