Since 1967, Watts Counseling and Learning Center Programs has provided counseling, outreach, and educational services to the residents of Watts and the surrounding communities, and it was established just two years after the 1965 Watts civil unrest. The Center is a community service of Kaiser Permanente Southern California and was established to provide mental health and educational resources for the children and families of Watts, regardless of whether or not they are Kaiser Permanente members. The Center’s motto is “helping people grow,” and its mission states that empowering multi-generational individuals and families to cope with stresses and barriers will ultimately strengthen the community.

Graduate social work interns receive professional fieldwork education supervised by licensed clinical staff, and graduate educational therapy interns receive professional training supervised by Board Certified staff. Partnering schools for graduate social work interns include the University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California, California State University at Long Beach and Los Angeles, and Smith College in Massachusetts. Partnering schools for graduate educational therapy interns include UC Riverside and California State University Northridge. In collaboration with The Princeton Review, students planning to take the SAT/ACT exams participate in test preparation courses.
