About

Camp Woodcraft offers hands-on, nature-based adventures that include School Retreats, outdoor education programs, Sleepaway Camp, Family Camp, and the Eco Warriors youth leadership retreat. Campers take part in classic camp activities such as gathering around a campfire and going on a hike. Eco Warriors focuses on tackling real-world environmental problems through science and civic engagement, while Family Camp includes supports so campers of different ages, skills, and abilities can participate together.

Camp Woodcraft is a program of Woodcraft Rangers and has operated for over a century, with scouting and camping programs that began in Los Angeles in 1922. It was founded in 1902 by author and naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton and has a long history of fostering inclusion and access in the outdoors. Its programs use an experiential, nature-based curriculum aligned with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and include outdoor education experiences offered year-round. Camp Woodcraft follows an all-gender welcoming model, follows recommendations from Scouts for Equality for full gender inclusion, allows campers to elect the cabin they most identify with, and uses individual shower stalls for privacy, with mixed gender activity units combining bunk units for daytime activities.

Camp Woodcraft’s Camp-4-All model and partnerships make it possible for over half of its campers to attend through heavily subsidized or free programs. In 2023, Woodcraft launched an inclusion initiative with the California Department of Developmental Services and local Regional Centers to expand access for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism and ADHD, with inclusion specialists and partnerships for additional support services. The program uses inclusive and adaptable programming that prioritizes equity, access, and inclusion, with comprehensive staff training, collaborative goal-setting with parents and schools, and on-site responsive support for students and families.

The leadership team includes Helen “Curly” Morales, Director of Camp Woodcraft & Outdoor Education; Natalie “Selfie” Pinedo, Manager of Outdoor Education; and Diana Gonzalez, Outdoor and Environmental Educator. Helen Morales brings 16 years of experience in youth development, serves on the board of the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education, is a national trainer, and serves on the DEI committee for the American Camp Association. Natalie is a graduate of the University of Phoenix with a BA in Human Services, and Diana is a credentialed educator. In 2024, Helen was recognized as Outdoor Educator of the Year for Southern California by AEOE, and under her leadership Camp Woodcraft received the American Camp Association’s Eleanor P. Eells Award for Excellence in Research in Practice.

Year-round youth development staff reflect the diversity of the students served, and the program uses culturally responsive programming that integrates diverse perspectives. Inclusion specialists enhance access for neurodivergent youth and youth with disabilities, and Family Camp offers inclusive supports to help campers of all ages, skills, and abilities participate.
