About the provider
GAP was created in 1986 as the outgrowth of the Harbor Youth Violence Reduction Roundtable. In 2000, the program began to expand and started doing business as The Gang Alternatives Program. Its mission is to prevent young people from joining gangs. GAP also provides community clean up services, graffiti abatement, community beautification, and service in the Harbor Area of Los Angeles and communities in and around the Los Angeles area, including Lynwood.
Schools are identified by at-risk status and community need, or self-referral. The Gang Prevention Education program is for 2nd, 4th, and 6th graders; originally the fifth grade was the target group but this was changed to fourth grade. GAP's programs are provided for young people and their families.
