In 1999, the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu was created in reaction to the tragedy at Columbine by a small group of concerned community members. The Boys & Girls Club of Malibu Wellness Center is a dedicated, trauma-informed entity that provides direct client services and works alongside schools, faith-based organizations, and government agencies to achieve improved mental health in Malibu and beyond, with a focus on access to mental health education, counseling, and wellness support services for children in grades Pre K–12th, their families, and the community at large. The Wellness Center operates as a trauma-informed facility, offers secure and confidential Telehealth appointments, and states that services are tailored for historically marginalized individuals including but not limited to LGBTQ, immigrants, and BIPOC.

The Boys & Girls Club of Malibu partners with the local school district to provide social emotional learning for grades K–12th, supports faith-based organizations, provides resources and life skills workshops to the Latin community, and maintains and improves the mental well-being of the aging population. Through partnerships with expert agencies, it provides resource assistance in financial advocacy, healthcare and medical needs, immigration challenges, ESL resources, tutoring, domestic violence, and employment opportunity. The organization states that it is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to people of all walks and abilities, regardless of sex, ethnicity, or age, and expressly protects applicants and employees from discrimination based on a wide range of inherent traits.

Parents describe the Club as providing a safe and fun environment where kids can be active and engaged with their friends after school or in the summer when parents have to work, and as a very special place that holds space for kids’ sense of safety and respect for each other to grow. One parent states that they do not know what their family would do without the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu and that they are grateful to have a safe, caring, fun, and supportive place for kids to hang out before and after school, calling it a lifeline for families with working parents.
