• Ages: 7–17 years old
• Schedule: Kibbutz is an immersive four-week program.
Camp JCA Shalom was established in 1951. Its mission is to provide transformative experiences through communal living, outdoor learning, community, and camp magic, and to offer enriching experiences in a natural setting that foster Jewish tradition and values, build community, cultivate long-lasting friendships, and create deep connections for campers going into grades 2–12. The camp offers Habonim one-week mini camps for entering grades 2–6, a Rishonim program for entering grades 2–4 as a first extended stay away from home, a Giborim “undernight” experience at camp, and an Alufim first out-of-camp overnight for entering grade 7. The Gesher program includes hiking to the beach and ocean kayaking, followed by an overnight in Malibu.
Teen Leadership Programs at Camp JCA Shalom include TASC, Kibbutz, an Israel Trip, and CITs, with teen programming that explores advocacy, develops leadership, and inspires action. Kibbutz is an immersive four-week Jewish camping and leadership experience where campers build their own communal space, cook many of their own meals, and work together on an Avodah (service project). The Israel Trip is for entering grade 11 teens. All Teen Leadership Programs have opportunities to gain community service hours and have a minimum and maximum number of participants. CITs have an additional application and interview prior to acceptance, and CITs may advance to junior counselor positions during Session 3 and receive compensation.
Camp JCA Shalom is a proud partner and grantee of RootOne. As part of Shalom Institute programs, there is a social enterprise for young adults with special needs and diverse abilities called Shemesh Farms. Neighbors include Reptacular Ranch with over 300 animals. Programs at Camp JCA Shalom foster Jewish tradition, build community, and promote service.
Parent testimonials describe first-time overnight campers having meaningful and positive experiences, with appreciation for the emphasis on character development, personal growth, thoughtful communication with parents, and inclusivity that brings youth from different places and countries together. Parents also report campers returning home with positive memories, strong connections with counselors and bunkmates, and a desire to return to camp.
