About
Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball offers a recreational basketball season that includes league play for K–12th grade players. The program includes playoffs for grades 4 and above and also runs youth scorekeeping for games.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Registration typically opens in the fall, with a pre-season timeline from September 15 through December, and games played on weekends from early January through early March. Each 1st–8th grade team has one 1-hour practice per week during the season and plays one game per week on weekends.
Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball is a volunteer run organization with a Board President, Mark Sprague. The mission of Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball is to welcome both new and returning K–12th grade players to take part in a recreational basketball season full of fun, friends and learning. Volunteers include parent and community members who can serve as Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Parent, or join the Board of Directors.
In K–3rd grade leagues, friend requests are considered and coaches are invited to form teams of friends and classmates. In 4–8th grade leagues, teams are typically selected through a draft process to promote balanced competition, and grades 4 and above have an opportunity to enter the playoffs. In the high school leagues, players have the opportunity to form their own teams with friends and classmates, and these leagues do not have a designated practice time during the week.
Youth scorekeepers are hired to work weekend shifts at games and are responsible for managing the scorebooks and scoreboards. The application for Youth Scorekeepers goes live November 15–30 and is available to returning scorekeepers first. The organization uses SportsEngine's Sports Relationship Management (SRM) software and is subject to the Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball privacy policy. Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball shares updates and accepts social media submissions through its Instagram account @mbyb_manhattanbeach, including posts that tag @mbyb_manhattanbeach or are emailed to [email protected].
